Kia ora, I’m Declan — The Gutter Guy.
There’s no team behind this business. No franchise head office, no fleet of unmarked utes, no call centre. It’s me: one bloke based in New Brighton with a ladder, a ute, and a slightly unreasonable fondness for well-behaved spouting.
How this started
Gutters became the specialty, but they weren’t where I began. I’ve been cleaning windows around Christchurch since before the earthquakes — which surprises people who only know me from the gutter work. Over time the gutters took over, because it turned out I was rather good at them, and because Christchurch homeowners kept discovering how hard it is to find someone who does the job properly and doesn’t muck you around.
These days I look after gutters all over the city — gutter cleaning is the core of what I do, with downpipe clearing as standard, window cleaning for those who want the whole roofline finished, and solar panel or low-pressure exterior cleaning by arrangement when the job suits.
How I work
The rules are boringly consistent:
The price I quote is the price you pay. No travel charges added afterwards. No GST surprise on the invoice. No surcharges because your gutters were worse than they looked over the phone. I’d rather lose a job than win it with a number that grows later — an attitude that came from watching someone get stung with exactly those hidden extras, and deciding my business would run the opposite way.
No mess left behind. This is the thing customers mention most in reviews — more than price, more than speed. Debris comes off the roof by hand, gets bagged, and leaves with me. Gardens, decks and pets are treated with due care; one customer noted I “managed not to damage anything in my garden - quite a feat!” I was quietly chuffed about that one.
I tell you what I find. Half the value of a professional clean is having experienced eyes on your roofline. If there’s standing water, a joint letting go, sealant past its best, or something on the roof itself that needs attention, you’ll hear about it plainly — as plenty of reviewers have noted, from “an honest update on the condition of my gutters” to flagged garage-roof issues that had nothing to do with the job I was there for. If it needs a spouting specialist or roofer rather than a cleaner, I’ll say so. I don’t upsell services I don’t offer.
I move quickly when I can. Reviews mention being “here within a couple of hours of my call”. Some of that is luck of geography; most of it is caring whether your overflowing gutter is dripping down the inside of your wall while you wait.
Why one man beats a franchise
When you ring, you talk to the person doing the work. When you ask a question, it’s answered by someone who’s actually seen your roof. When something’s not right, there’s exactly one person accountable — and he answers nearly every review personally, which regulars seem to appreciate.
It also means I’m choosy about what I take on. Solar panel cleaning and exterior washing happen by arrangement, honestly assessed. Jobs beyond my remit get referred elsewhere. That discipline is easier to keep when your name is on every single job.
The supervisor
Full disclosure: quality control on site is overseen by a dog. My supervisor takes her role seriously, though mostly from indoors when the weather’s cold — “Too cold for my supervisor today so stayed inside and critiqued from there.” Standards remain high; naps are frequent.
