Downpipe Unblocking Christchurch
A gutter is only half the system. Every metre of spouting on your house drains into a downpipe, and when that downpipe blocks, the whole thing backs up — no matter how clean the gutters themselves are. What a downpipe actually does (and why it fails)
Downpipes are the vertical pipes that carry roof water from your gutters down to the stormwater system. Everything that washes off your roof — leaves, twigs, moss, grit from concrete tiles, the occasional wayward bird’s nest — funnels towards them. They’re the narrowest part of the whole setup, which makes them the first place the system chokes.
In Christchurch the usual culprits are:

- Water overflowing from the joint between gutter and downpipe during rain, even when the gutter itself looks clear.

- A downpipe that bulges or drips along its length mid-storm.
- Water pooling at the base of the pipe instead of draining away.
- Overflow at the top of the downpipe while other downpipes on the same house run freely.
If you’re seeing any of these, the fix is usually quick once someone gets up there with the right gear.
How I clear them
No guesswork — I work from the top down and the bottom up:
- Check the outlet at the gutter end and clear the leaf guard or strainer if there is one.
- Flush the pipe to find where the blockage sits and shift it.
- Rod or dig out stubborn plugs at bends and joints where debris compacts.
- Test with a proper flow of water so we both know it’s running clear before I pack up.
- Report what caused it. If the blockage points to something bigger — a crushed pipe underground, a gutter falling the wrong way — you’ll get an honest rundown, not a shrug.

How do I know if it’s the downpipe and not the gutter? Watch in rain: if water spills over right at the downpipe while the rest of the gutter line copes, the pipe is the problem. Gurgling and bulging are also downpipe-specific signs.
Can a blocked downpipe cause damage? Yes — backed-up water spills onto cladding, sits in the gutter until it corrodes or overflows into the fascia, and pools against foundations at ground level. It’s worth sorting promptly.
